The Brandenburg Main State Archive

Brandenburgisches Landeshauptarchiv
serves as the main archive of the State of Brandenburg and is responsible for the records of the state's
administration, its government agencies, as well as their legal and other predecessors. The certificates,
registers, files, maps, plans, posters and many other objects made available by the archive help with
the realization of public tasks as well as with the protection of legal concerns. Moreover, these documents
support a large variety of study projects, be it regional, local or genealogical studies. Thus, the authority
regards itself as a bridge between the past, the present and the future. Among its tasks are the safe
storage and conservation of all its records. Moreover, the items need to be made accesible and evaluable.
Archiving of files of the administration which are dispensable but worth storing is one of the archive's
permanent tasks. Brandenburgisches Landeshauptarchiv, founded in June 1949, was called Landesarchiv
Brandenburg until 1951 and Staatsarchiv Potsdam from 1965 until 1990. Its records comprise about
40,000 linear metres of records / archival materials whose origins range from the middle of the 12th
century to our days. Among these records are ca. 10,000 charters and about 130,000 maps and plans.
Brandenburgisches Landeshauptarchiv is an authority within the portfolio of Ministry of Culture, Science
and Research of Brandenburg. Legal basis of the authority s work is the Law on the Preservation and
Usage of Public Records in Brandenburg (Brandenburgisches Archivgesetz - BbgArchivG) from 7 April 1994
(cf. GVBI I, p. 94).

Terms of Use
The archive welcomes public use of its records for scientific research, genealogical, local or regionals
studies as well as official tasks provided the user can verify a legitimate interest. Excluded from this
regulation are records which are either younger than 10 years or related to a natural person. The latter
may be made public 10 years after the person's death or 90 years after the person s birth at the earliest.
In case the year of birth cannot be specified, the retention period ends 60 years after the records were
created. Such retention periods do not apply to records documenting the activities of persons of contem-
porary history or of bearers of a public office as far as their activities have been related to their public office.
The archive is entitled to impose obligations on the use of its records, or even completely deny access.
Conditions justifying such measures are severe disadvantages to the Federal Republic of Germany or any
other state, the violation of legitimate interests of third parties, usage inconsistent with the preservation of
records or violations of laws. In particular cases, the archive is entitled to charge fees for the use of the
records. For details check the Scale of Charges ( cf. Gebührenordnung für das Brandenburgische Landes-
hauptarchiv [LHAGebOJ] from 26 January 2000, GVBI. II, p. 53). Moreover, copies, which users can order
from the archive s copy department, are subject to a fee.
